My Short Story “Veil of Ignorance” Now Online

March 2, 2011 by David Barr Kirtley 3 Comments

I’ve also posted the text of my short story “Veil of Ignorance” (the audio has been online for a while). I get a pretty regular stream of people coming to my site from Wikipedia looking for this story, I assume because it’s mentioned here. They’re usually from a university, and they usually poke around briefly, and when they can’t find the story in text format they leave. Rarely someone will listen to the audio, but mostly they just leave. They never look at any of my other stories, and they never buy a copy of the story from Fictionwise. This has been going on for years. So I’m throwing in the towel and just making the text of the story free. Enjoy.

And if you haven’t read the story, do check it out. It’s got a cool shifting first-person viewpoint.

loved the “stars and rolling vermeil clouds”. i really had a sense of hanging out at an awkward, tense, juvenile party in a lavish starbase-like penthouse. seems to lean at PKD with the drug element, but the hyperconsciousness of the drug’s effect made the distinction from reality all too clear. i do wonder about Dillon’s plan… will they become homogeneous, will they break under Conrad’s diabolical will, or will any one of them tire of drugs influence and force cessation in some way? would liked to have experienced context switching through Brad’s afterlife too. great stuff!

p.s. maybe instead of throwing in the towel, you could pass around a tip jar – maybe link to your other stories on fictionwise here, or a donate button on your sidebar? not sure.

Glad you liked the story! I’ve thought about implementing some sort of tip jar. Maybe I’ll do that.

Roger Barr

My grandfather Roger Barr passed away early this morning at the age of 98. He was my mom’s father, and was my last surviving grandparent. He was being cared for by my uncle Steve (his son) and aunt Denice — both medical professionals — and was still sharp and good-humored in his final days. Yesterday […]
