I notice that the next New York Review of Science Fiction Reading Series event will feature Karen Russell. A year or so ago I was browsing Amazon.com and I stumbled across Russell’s debut book, the short story collection St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves. I took a chance and ordered it, and really enjoyed the stories, which are surreal and wistful and in which the Southern weirdness of the author’s Florida upbringing features prominently. My favorite piece, “Children’s Reminiscences of the Western Migration,” is about a family of American settlers who hitch their wagon to the horns of the family’s minotaur father. I’m going to try really hard to make it to this event, and I hope I’ll see some of you there.
